Adding a bit of blue to the bottom always seems to make me happier…so I started adding more color with the “free” text at the bottom, one thing lead to another and well…..

I have grown to like more even colors with this piece. I’ve also put more patterns in to help with depth. The patterns do not appear as clear with this electronic version but the image still prints well.  This project and style has been great to improve my vector drawing skills and has really emphasized the fine…very fine line of going “overboard”. The most difficult part of a style like this is knowing when to stop…

Here is what I have been able to regenerate. This version is closer to the original. Reaching a complete duplicate of the original has been extremely difficult especially starting from the ground up with all the vector drawing. I have even drawn most of the text on this poster finding no font would justify the flow I tried to accomplish. This will be a project I revist more after final exams.

Here is what I have been able to accomplish, rather re-accomplish after my computer crashed earlier this week. I was able to re-create the maple seed and work text into this file however it does not have as much detail or quality as it’s predecessor. more color needs to be added and the text still needs to be re-worked so that it filled and made up the maple seed. Balancing other class work, I am honestly surprised I was able to come this far in re-creating with such a short time restraint.

For this project I would ideally like to design a concert poster for a band. I would like to keep a vintage style and will most likely incorporate a lot of vector drawings. below are some images to inspire…

Assignment 3: Cerberus

I have two versions below that I am nearly equally drawn to. It’s a tough choice but if I had to choose one, I think it will be the second version.

During this project I used a lot of color correcting techniques to achieve similar lighting for each element of the image. I also utilized color manipulation of the background by adjusting curves of each channel and exaggerating the saturation hue a slight amount.

Hybrid assignment

•November 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

For our 4th assignment we are to combine three differing elements to create a hybrid person or creature. Planning out this assignment has been somewhat difficult since there are no boundaries for what we can create. With that said, I chose to narrow my focus on Greek Mythological characters and have derived at a conclusion of recreating a Cerberus character from photos I have taken of my own dogs. A little brushing up on Greek Mythology has also been required to accurately depict this character.

Cerberus was the son of Echidna, a hybrid half-woman, half-serpent and Typhon, a fire-breathing giant whom even the Olympian gods feared. His brother is Orthrus, always depicted as a two-headed hellhound. The common depiction of Cerberus in Greek mythology and art is as having three heads, a mane of live serpents (similar to Medusa’s hair) and a serpent’s tail. In most works the three-heads each respectively see and represent the past, the present and the time yet to come, while other sources suggest the heads represent birth, youth and old age. Each of Cerberus’ heads is said to have an appetite only for live meat and thus allow the spirits of the dead to freely enter the underworld, but allow none to leave. Cerberus was always employed as Hades’ loyal watchdog, and guarded the gates that granted access and exit to the underworld (also called Hades). ~http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus

Here is a sketch of Cerberus by William Blake:

The photos I wish to use of my dogs are below. This project is personally a little comical for me. Most of the photos below of my dog, DeKooning, definitely do NOT depict is everyday demeanor. He is by far the most laid back, calm and relaxed 1 yr old dog I have ever met. However, these photos were taken on a day he must have been feeling more spunky while playing with one of his dog-friends.

Final Utopia and Destruction

•October 30, 2008 • 1 Comment

During this assignment I found utilizing multiple layers to be extremely benificial towards achieving the look I wanted. By using many layers I could adjust transparencies and other aspects to each “piece”of fire and waterfalls. Here are the two finished products.

Utopia

Destruction:

I decided to add one of my number one pet-peeves to the desctruction of such a beautiful place, graffiti in natural settings. I find it quite disturbing to be at a serene river, look up a rock face only to find that someone has grotesquely bosted that they “wuz here”!

Utopia Destruction Continued…

Here’s my nearly complete destroyed version of my utopia. I still need to add the junk and trash elements in the foreground but aside from that, I’m close to wrapping up this assignment. Any suggestions before the final piece is due?

Begin Utopia Destruction!

For the second part of this assignment I must create the destruction of my Utopia, or rather, Hell. With a serene, peaceful and lush Utopia, I want to manipulate it in a way to evoke the opposite response. Changing the waterfall into a fire fall will be my first step in the destruction phase. This massive element will focus most of the attention to the falls however, the cause of the falls will be captured in the foreground. I want to convey the damaging affect man has on environment and plan to incorporate photos from junk yards and trash piles in the foreground of the fiery scene. I have worked on converting the water fall into a fire-fall and found it is going to take a lot of layers to achieve the look I desire for the finished counterpart to my Utopia. Here’s my progress…
